And THIS is what brings me back to fannish topics?
Nikita

Nashville is the best premiere I've seen this year (though Arrow and Elementary are both very, very good). If there is not a fandom, I'm going to wind up biting the walls.

Fic Recs, and In Case You're Wondering Why My Sense of Humor Skews Towards the Absurd
Nikita
ficangel
1) I went down to Texas to visit family this weekend.

2) I have a new iPhone and just now realized how easy it is to read fic from it.

3) Here you go:

So Know One Told You, which is a Steve/Tony and Bruce/Natasha/Clint AU that is really delightfully ensemble. (Also some Thor/Loki, but don't worry, Aud, it's unrequited and little more than a reference...I can still feel you looking at me.) It's based on Friends, meaning that each chapter is based around some kind of iconic moment from the show. It starts as pure comedy, but over time gets deeper and deeper while still being hysterically funny, and then suddenly I'm crying in a parking lot in Decatur and wondering when the hell this happened. It's unfinished. I'm getting the shakes.

The Last Love Song of Anthony E. Stark, which is Tony/Steve (because that was apparently my thing this weekend) with background Loki/Sif. Tony contracts an Asgardian virus that leads to him losing his memory. The way the author describes sense of self slowly slipping away is heart-wrenching and, frankly, terrifying.

And then there was the actual family gathering. A little background: I never met my maternal grandfather, because he was a vile human being and, frankly, little girls were not safe around him. He died in 1990 of a massive heart attack, anyway, completely estranged from the rest of the family, because: vile. Since he was a pretty heavy smoker, no one questioned his relatively young age of death even though my mother's side of the family tends towards nearly freakish physical hardiness.

At the gathering, out of nowhere, my uncle up and pops up to let us all know that 1) my grandfather first married one woman, then divorced her and married her daughter, so he married his step-daughter, his ex-wife was his mother-in-law, and his final wife was both my mother's stepmother and stepsister. Yeah. And 2) about six years after my grandfather's death, my uncle got a call from the last wife's latest husband...who died in the exact same mysterious way that my grandfather did in spite of having no previous health problems or history of heart disease. My grandfather had been cremated, so there was no evidence left, but...yeah. It was made all the more bizarre/reluctantly hilarious by how completely calm by uncle was in describing this. "Oh, our family is a Carl Hiaasen novel...is there any more of that salad?"

Yet more Avengers recs.

Six Times the Avengers Stopped an Alien Invasion. Really funny, especially since the author avoids the obvious fights.

trouble never comes alone. Bucky during his Winter Soldier years. Grim stuff, but brilliantly characterized.

Out of the bone white afternoon. Clint saved Natasha. She returns the favor.

Trolling for great justice.

Or, yet more Avengers recs.

Cat's in the Cradle by Lunik the Bard, in which Tony pretends he's Loki's father and they basically just troll the shit out of everyone. Actually, just read all of Lunik's stuff, she's incredibly funny.

Sometimes a Cigar, in which Thor discovers psychology and sets about trying to fix Loki. Great Thor voice, with an ending that's just the right about of bittersweetness mingled with hope.

whisper tales of gore, in which Loki wins and shit gets real. Incredibly dark, with great Loki and Natasha voices.

An Acquired Taste by Hella, in which Loki finally gets that drink and sort of half-assedly attempts to do the right thing.

I have been actively repelled by the idea of food for the past two days. It's not nausea, it's just...I look at it and wonder why the hell it's even necessary.

And once again I bring you Avengers recs.

One Tin Soldier, or: five times Steve proved to the team that he's a good leader, and one time they responded by rallying around him. I had moments, reading this.

Four-letter Words, or: Loki sleeps with everyone. I did not expect the end pairing, but I like it a lot.

Optional, or: Thor doesn't like pants. I laughed for an inappropriate amount of time over this one.

Where the Circle Ends, or: every fandom needs a stable of zombie AUs. Steve/Bucky.

Epicentre, or: sequel to the zombie AU in which Bucky submits to having his Winter Soldier triggers scrubbed out, and it...doesn't go well. Oh, Bucky..

And then I IM'ed with the rest of the department about stupid crap all afternoon.

Today I took a file to my supervisor after finally giving up, because I had given the judge EVERY SINGLE DOCUMENT WE HAVE TO HANDLE THIS SITUATION and was about to cry.

He looked.

And he looked.

And he looked.

And he finally said, "No, you did it right the first time, I have no idea why she doesn't like you."

THANK CHRIST I WAS REALLY STARTING TO THINK IT WAS JUST MY OWN DERPITUDE HERE.

But the mean attorney still likes me? I'm not entirely sure why, but I'm going to roll with it.

Okay, I've seen maybe an episode and a half of Merlin over the course of its run (and I have no desire to see more), but I've developed the most ridiculous crush on Katie McGrath over the past few months. Here's a genderswapped Dean/Castiel with Katie playing Castiel.

I would watch that shit, buy the DVDs, and travel to ComicCon solely for the panels, and you know that you would, too.

I'm still in fandom, marginally.

Have some Avengers recs:

He's Not Heavy (He's Our Villain). I recced this fic in a flail-glee to Aud, but once we stopped and talked about it, we really liked it for the exact same reasons: it takes Loki's redemption slowly, it doesn't let him get away with shit, but it's so lovely and graceful all the same. (Darcy really is a character I think very capable of dispensing grace without tolerating woobie bullshit. It's her fantastic wheelhouse when she's a secondary character, and this fic tos-and-fros about who is the primary protagonist a lot.) I really do love stories wherein someone sees the possibility in another person before they realize it themselves, and thus it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The Last Great Border Town Hotel. Clint and Natasha backstory, from Nat's POV. Very lovely and unsparing. I really like how Avengers-fandom has taken this unflinching tone with Natasha; it emphasizes that she didn't woobie her redemption, that motherfucker was earned. (Clint is her self-fulfilling prophecy.)

The Stories That Stay With You. OH, THOR, YOU ARE THE SWEETEST-EVER THING. In which Thor reads LotR. He's not stupid, he's not even really brash, he just...does everything with his entire freaking soul. When he loves you, he doesn't give up.

though you know so few words. Bucky, post-Winter Soldier, feels himself around the Avengers who don't have history with him. Insightful and spare.

And then when I come back, it's only because I want something.

Anyone out there want to take a look at an urban fantasy second draft, about 70,000 words long? Not a beta, just...eh, tell me if everyone's relatively likable and it makes sense and what-not.
