Morals Without God. Link via [info]apocalypsos.

I doubt that I'll ever be religious again short of a burning bush sort of experience, but what I remember of faith? Was that of shifting ever so slightly towards something greater than yourself, like turning towards the sun. The "but I'll rape my neighbor without Jebus!!!" crowd makes me sigh; I can promise you that when I did believe, I never did it because I thought that Sky Daddy was going to swoop down and spank me.

Today was such a bad day, writing-wise, that it might as well have not even happened.

Word. And if that's the only reason some people don't steal, rape and murder? There's something really fucking wrong with them.

Kohlberg's theory of moral development, man. These folks (contra-article) can't be ruled by their parents any longer, so they have to believe that Sky Daddy is always waiting to swoop down (and punish the mean kids who call bullshit on them). Congratulations, that's the making of a perpetual four year-old.

I'm interested by it, too. Of course, we all anthropomorphize our pets, but I swear to God every animal that my mother owned just knew the night that my brother was killed and was clingy and sad, also. I'd like to read some evidence that's not anecdotal.
